Iftar is the meal taken by our Muslim brothers and sisters when they end their daily 15-hour fasting. They break their fast at sunset, right after Maghrib or evening prayer. It is one of the religious observances of Ramadan and is done as a community.
In an Islamic country like United Arab Emirates, whether you practice Islam or not, you look forward to the Holy Month of Ramadan not just because you get to work only for six hours in a day for the whole month (How cool is that?!) but also because most (if not all) food establishments offer great Iftar deals which everyone can enjoy.
I started bugging the bestie about Iftar 2 weeks after Ramadan commenced. I was like a broken record, telling her “Let’s have Iftar!” but since she’s a certified workaholic and has a busy work schedule, it only happened 2 nights before Ramadan ends (Oh well!). Our resto pick: the famous American seafood and steakhouse, Tony Roma’s at Sheikh Zayed Road.
Tony Roma’s Iftar Special offer includes soup of the day (which I now realize they didn’t serve), appetizer, main course and a drink (all of your choice), all for only AED79. Add AED29 and you’ll get chocolate brownie sundae as dessert.
For appetizer, I chose TR’s signature onion loaf, giant hand-cut Spanish onions, breaded and deep fried and served with TR’s special dip. I’m totally not fond of eating onion (raw or otherwise) but this dish is an exception. I’m not sure if it’s the sauce but TR’s onion ring is prolly the best I’ve tasted so far. Yumyum!
Choosing for the entrée for me was no-brainer. I’m a meat lover so I opted for the rump steak, done medium rare, and a preference of mashed potato as side dish. Delish!
The Bestie’s Pick:
The bestie chose boneless bites for starter, tender chicken breast, breaded and tossed in buffalo sauce, served with greens and creamy bleu cheese dressing. Of course I tried it too. The dish was so-so. 🙂
The bestie enjoyed her grilled seabass, her choice for the main course which she partnered with french fries as side dish. Fish and chips, yes?
For desserts, we had chocolate brownie sundae and new york cheesecake. The bestie favored the former over the latter. As for me, having a serious sweet tooth loved both. Whatever you are as long as you’re sweet, I Love You! Haha!
The Verdict: We were satisfied customers! Delish food and cozy place (although I prefer dining al fresco but it’s not a good idea when it’s 40+ degrees, right?). Totally not bad for the amount we spent. As the bestie always say, “Cheap!” 🙂 .
The bestie and I seldom see each other these days so a gossipy convo (Haha!) over good food is such a nice way to catch up and end an uber-tiring work day.
